Jews came to Burma in the mid-1800s from Baghdad. They ran the trade routes from SE Asia to the Middle East. They did well here, in 1910 Rangoon had a Jewish mayor.

Much of the population left when the Japanese showed up in 1942. Many more left 20 years later when the Burmese government nationalized businesses.

Musmeah Yeshuaone is in the heart of downtown Rangoon. It's been recently restored and is the only synagogue in all of Burma.
