Every morning monks (in saffron robes) and nuns (in pink, of course) take to the streets to collect donations which will be their sustenance for that day. People usually give rice, bottles of water, or money in lieu of food. We thought it would be a nice idea to give them something a bit unusual. We first checked with a friend who spent some time as a monk in his younger years and asked if it would be taboo to give something fun and sweet. He said not at all - in fact he always looked forward to getting such treats when he went out for morning alms. And this young novitiate doesn't look too disappointed to get a small chocolate cake, does she? |
