If you are reading this the chances are the world did not come to an end this past month as some predicted. And I didn't notice any cosmic collisions, monstrous earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. Did you? But why was this date such a big deal?

Mayans invented a very complicated calendar system. Their long count calendar is measured in baktuns. We've just completed the 13th and last baktun in a series which began over 5,000 years ago. At this point the calendar goes back to 1. So we're now entering the 1st baktun of a new cycle. Hence, all the brouhaha.
