The Mayans built a vast network of city-states throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. These sites, like this one in Edzna, a short drive from Campeche, were inhabited for nearly 2 millennia and then rather suddenly abandoned just before the conquistadors arrived. No one is quite sure why. It's part of the "Mayan Mystery".

This is the Edificio de los Cinco Pisos. It's the main attraction of Edzna and was built during the "classic period" of Mayan civilization - from 200 to 900 AD.
