From Yogyakarta we moved eastward to Solo, famed for its Batik. Batik is a painstaking method of designing and coloring fabric. It involves applying wax to cloth in a particular pattern and then dipping the cloth in a dye bath. The waxed part of the cloth doesn't absorb the dye. The process is repeated again and again with more wax and with different color dyes. When finished the fabric is washed in hot water to remove the wax. Only then is the pattern revealed. This woman is using a pen-like instrument called a canting to create the design.
