AJANTA CAVES Some of these cave-temples date back more than 2 millennia. All 29 of them, cut deep into the rock face of this river gorge, are dedicated to the Buddha. They were abandoned and forgotten after about 500 AD - only to be rediscovered by accident in 1819. Many of the people who visit this site are from the Far East. Although India is where Buddhism started, there aren't all that many adherents here today - Hinduism still reigns supreme. Click below for a glimpse inside these caves. |
