From Maharashtra we headed northeast to the city of Jaipur, the capital of one of India's largest states: Rajasthan. Girls just wanna have fun. But it wasn't all that easy for them under Moghul Emperors and Hindu Maharajas. Women were kept hidden from public view for their entire lives in zenanas --basically, wife and concubine storage areas. This building was put up on a main drag of Jaipur so that palace women could sneak a peek of the outside world without being seen. If, on those very rare occasions a woman had to leave the palace, it was in a covered carriage. So much for having fun! |
