ELLORA CAVES

After Bombay we headed farther north into Maharashtra to explore the Ellora and Ajanta Caves. This temple was created, not by piling up stones and cementing them together but by hacking every square inch out of the solid granite mountainside until a quarter-million tons had been removed.

It's the world's largest monolithic building, was built around 700 AD, and is dedicated to Shiva. There are other sites like this one very nearby that are Hindu and Jain.
