Like Devil's Island, the notorious penitentiary off the coast of Guiana, Con Son, the largest of the Con Dau Islands, houses this prison, where the French incarcerated, tortured and executed anti-colonialist political prisoners.

The South Vietnamese took over from the French after 1954 and used it to provide uncomfortable accommodation for their own adversaries. Happily, there have been no guests here for many years.
