At some point, when all the other Temples in the area were undergoing reconstruction, a decision was made not to completely reclaim this site from the jungle.

Perhaps the trees, vines and roots had fused themselves too thoroughly with the sandstone or perhaps it was to allow modern day visitors a glimpse of what the "rediscoverers" of the 1860s found when they came across these sites in their travels.
