Every building, every sculpture, every direction signified something in Khmer architecture.

The lotus-shaped tower, either on a natural or, if need be, artificial mound, represents Mount Meru, which according to Hindu myth was the axis of the world, the center of the universe and the home of Brahma.

The surrounding moat represented the cosmic ocean and the causeway over it symbolized the bridge between man and god.
