According to myth, an Indian prince came across the sea and married the daughter of the Naga King. It must have been a strange union, as a Naga is a multi-headed, cobra-like water spirit. But these two became the progenitors of the Khmer race. This balustrade, bounding both sides of the causeway to the 9th century temple of Bakong, represents a Naga, and is one of many motifs you see repeated in later temples at Angkor. |
