ANGKOR WAT
THE CITY TEMPLE

The thing that hits you when you see Angkor Wat for the first time is the sheer scope of it. The outer wall measures 1,500 by 1,300 meters and encloses an enormous moat at the center of which is another vast area of buildings and lakes which in turn surround the actual temple complex.

Angkor Wat is not the oldest in the area, but it is the best preserved and most famous. It was built in the early 12th century by Suryavarman II, one in a long line of self-proclaimed God-Kings. It was built to mirror Mount Meru - the home of the Hindu Gods - and it was dedicated to Vishnu.
