On April 17, 1975 Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh and took over Cambodia. The nightmare that followed left about 1½ million Cambodians dead. After years of foot-dragging, war-crimes trials are set to begin this year. The trials could give us a better idea of the who, what, when, where and how of these atrocities, but the lingering question that may never be answered is: Why? Tourists at Angkor are still warned not to stray too far off the beaten path for fear of extant landmines and other UXO from this tragic era.
