This mosaic floor goes back to Byzantine times and was part of Emperor Justinian's Great Palace. I love mosaics - the idea of using tiny bits of stone and glass to create works with such movement and fluidity has always intrigued me.

The Byzantines, more than anyone else, left behind extraordinary work - not just in Istanbul and the Eastern Roman Empire, but also in Ravenna, the capital of the Western Empire.
