This cistern was built by Justinian in the 6th century to supply water to his ever-expanding palace. It was forgotten for centuries and only rediscovered during Ottoman times when people were lowering buckets from the basement of their houses and coming up with fish! Now it's a tourist spot, complete with an underground cafe.
