The trip began with us buying a used car in Florida. We found a Nissan Sentra - a very popular car in Mexico. We planned a long trip from there all the way around the Gulf Coast -- Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and then into Mexico at Brownsville. This would be our "no chains" tour. We were going to avoid all the fast food chains that now line America's highways. We didn't realize at the time we'd also be dodging hurricanes the whole way.
