Another big day for La Candelaria is when 6 bulls are brought across the river and let loose on the shores of Tlacotalpan where they are free to rampage through town and wreak havoc with the populace. The story goes that one day, many years ago, a bull, of his own volition, swam across the river, wandered into the Santuario de la Candelaria and bowed down in front of the statue of the Virgin. Whether this is true, or just another bull story, I can't say. Thanks to our friends Gladys and Alan we got to be on a boat that was actually conveying the bulls across.
