The Lion’s Club of Tlacotalpan sponsored a Torneo de Gallos -- a cock fight. The entry fee was steep - 100 pesos for men, 50 for women. Cockfights are legal and a great source of entertainment in Mexico as in many countries around the world. In the US they're illegal except in Louisiana and New Mexico. The beverage of choice for the evening was beer, but Johnny Walker also had a strong presence. At the far end of the arena roosters were being coddled by their owners. Spectators stood along the sidelines inspecting the birds and placing bets with subtle gestures. The plasticized wall of the oval ring was quickly smeared with blood. |
