On our way back from Bolonchen we stopped by the lovely town of Hecelchakan - about halfway between Campeche and Merida - and we came across this structure. We were told it was put up in a matter of days - as it is every April - to hold bullfights. It can handle hundreds of spectators and during a fight it's packed to the rafters. I'm not a fan of bullfighting. I don't understand what enjoyment people get from torturing and killing animals, but many Mexicans love it. Of course it's the Spanish influence, bulls didn't exist here before their arrival. On the other hand Mayans did rip out the still-beating hearts of human victims in sacrifice rituals so maybe they've embraced bullfighting as a kind of replacement therapy.
