Wat means temple, and this is Wat Xieng Thong, built in the late 16th century. The long sloping roofs are very Laotian. At one point Luang Prabang was home to 66 wats - about half that number are still around today. The city was the capital of the first Lao Kingdom, called Lan Xang Hom Khao, or "one million elephants, one white parasol". |
