Images of the Buddha in his many poses are everywhere, each one means something different. Palms stretched in front means "offering protection." Hands crossed at the wrist means "contemplating the tree of enlightenment".

The statues here - Buddha standing up with his arms straight down at his sides is only found in Laos and is known as the "calling for rain" pose.
