Petanque is another holdover from Gallic times. We walked to a restaurant-cafe down the block and watched a few guys play, just to note the differences between this and bocce, my game.

Basically they're the same. I'll try my luck with these guys tomorrow. But all bets are off until I've had some practice with the rough court and the steel balls.
