We were happy in our treehouse on the Mekong for over a year. But then the machines moved in. They first took down everything green that stood between our house and the river - banana trees, flame trees, tall stands of bamboo - everything! Then came the dredge boats followed by back hoes, dump trucks and bulldozers.

Beginning before dawn and continuing well past sunset - 7 days a week. Noise and dust. It's all part of the embankment project funded by the Koreans to reduce flooding in Vientiane - a good thing. But for us it was time to move on.
