Savannakhet, a sleepy riverside town along the Mekong in southern Laos, is fast becoming a tourist attraction. The bridge across to Thailand was completed a few years back and there's now a casino here.

But I think the most attractive part of the place is the architecture - there are still hundreds of buildings, like this one, that give a glimpse of what all of the towns of SE Asia must have looked like during colonial times. I hope they survive the transition.
