The Spoleto area is rich in history, to say the least. After the ancient Umbrians came the Romans. When their empire fizzled out Ostrogoths from the north came down and fought the Byzantines until the whole area was so ravaged and decimated that the Longobards could easily scamper over the Alps and conquer huge swaths of the peninsula. The Longobards hung around from 568-774 AD. And it's because of them that parts of Umbria (including this temple) became a UNESCO World Heritage Site a couple of years ago. This is the Temple of Clitunno built at the time of the Lungobards alongside a river on a site that was sacred to the Romans who erroneously believed it was the source of the Tiber. |
