One of the reasons Gian Carlo Menotti chose Spoleto to host his festival back in 1957 was the number of beautiful theatres already in town - including an outdoor Roman theatre. Another reason was that the city is easy to get to - being on a direct rail line from Rome.

This is Teatro Nuovo which is not so nuovo as it opened in 1864 - just around the time of the reunification of Italy.
