We visited Ravenna in early August. It's a city near the Adriatic just a few hours north of us. Its heyday was in the 5th & 6th centuries when it was the western capital of the Roman Empire - or what was left of it. The eastern capital was Constantinople. These two capital cities were 1000 miles apart but they had a lot in common. One thing in particular - beautiful Byzantine mosaics. This is San Vitale Basilica. |
