Another sure sign that the season is changing is the appearance of crates of tomatoes, at 40¢ a kilo, along with canning jars. September is the time to put up your tomato harvest for the sauces you'll be making all winter long.

I normally don't plant tomatoes because I know I'll be inundated with them anyway. Friends show up for dinner with big bags in hand - plum tomatoes, beefsteak, cherry tomatoes - all summer long.
