Mount Kelimutu is a large, dormant volcano on the island of Flores. It last erupted in the mid-1800s and has been quiet ever since. But that last eruption left behind 3 beautiful crater lakes of shifting colors - turquoise, olive green and reddish black. Minerals dissolved in the water give it these changing tints. Up close it looks like a lake made of thick paint. Locals believe the lakes are sacred and the souls of the dead migrate here. Young ones go to the turquoise, the old to the green, and the wicked end up in the black one.
