Uses of Coconut - #47

Keralans say that there are 180 uses for coconut. I believe this is #47 - coir.

Coconut shells are dried and the fibers are stripped off by hand and then soaked in water for 3 months. They are then gathered and twisted into a very strong and long-lasting rope. You can buy it almost everywhere and it easily outsells modern substances, such as nylon, for any number of uses. Keralans use it to sew together wooden planks to make their canoes.
