Washing machines do have certain advantages, but in a pinch, there's nothing like a river wash. There are steps leading down to the water and there are always a few stones to scrape and beat your clothes on.

To dry them, there are tree branches, rooftops - even an occasional clothesline. Don't ask me how they dry things during the monsoon season.
