Is it true blonds have more fun? Ask Miss January, one of many involuntary participants in Makara Sankranti. It's a post-solstice harvest festival -- a celebration that the sun has changed direction and days are beginning to lengthen. It also celebrates the harvest, which at this time of year in Karnataka includes sugar cane and millet. I'm convinced that not a day goes by in India where there isn't a festival going on somewhere. They're usually very noisy affairs (music, singing, fireworks) that last for days. But none of this seems to faze Miss January, seen here decorated with turmeric, indigo -- and pure silver foil, to give her horns that certain je ne sais qua, which seems to match her expression. |
