North of Jaipur is the area known as Shekhawati. Camel caravans used to carry goods from the Ganges Delta across the desert to the ports of Gujarat and beyond. It was a land of merchants and marauders. The British arrived and switched the main centers of commerce to Calcutta and Bombay - bypassing this area. The merchants moved too, and then sent money back to their families to build elaborate havelis (villas). You can see one of them just above the camel. They are beautifully and strangely decorated, with a mix of ancient and modern themes. Many are now abandoned and disintegrating. Click below to see some |
