Trams first came into operation in Lisbon in 1873. At that time they were horse-powered (see insert). Electricity only came into play in the early years of the 20th century.

There are still a few lines running, including the popular #28 Tram (pictured here). But in these days I think it's mostly tourists who ride. Today, Lisboans prefer the more modern, fast and efficient Metro system - or buses - or Ubers.
