This is CA-9, one of the main highways stretching through Guatemala. This one runs from the port cities of the Caribbean to those of the Pacific. It is far too small for the amount of traffic it carries and in many places moves along at a snail's pace.

If you want to avoid the highways you can head up into the hills where you will pass many villages -- all with dozens of tumalos, (speed bumps) many of which are nasty and unmarked.

We had a rent-a-car for the trip. In retrospect this was a mistake. If you plan on visiting I would recommend bus travel, or a car-and-driver - or better yet, a helicopter !!
