This is one of the stelae nestled underneath one of those palapas. This one dates back to around 700 AD.

John Lloyd Stephens was an American explorer, writer, and diplomat. He was a pivotal figure in the rediscovery of Maya civilization throughout Middle America. One of his books is titled: Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan.

Stephens attempted, back in the mid 1800s, to buy the ruins of Quiriguá and ship these stelae to New York City for display in a museum.

That idea didn't work out. So here they are still.
