This is Quiriguá. During the Classic Period of the Mayan civilization (200-900 AD), Quiriguá was located at the confluence of several important trade routes. The site was occupied from 200 AD onwards. The construction of the acropolis began around 550 AD.

That is a ceiba tree. It is sacred to the Mayans who believed it was the axis mundi and connected the underworld to the heavens.

Quiriguá lies in eastern Guatamala, not far from the Caribbean. It gets hit by hurricanes on occasion which is why the stelae are sheltered under small palapa huts.
