Lago Atitlan lies west of Antigua. In the backgound are volcanic mountains that surround, and actually helped created the lake in eruptions and earthquakes that took place about 85,000 years ago. The town of San Pedro, where we stayed for a while is below, in the foreground.

These volcanos are pretty quiet these days but are still considered by geologists to be "active". On the far left you can see Fuego with a never-ending plume of smoke at its peak.
