There are about 100 wild elephants in Vietnam - all of them within the 120,000 hectare confines of Yok Don National Park just north of Buon Ma Thuot. We went stomping through the periphery of the reserve for about an hour with this domesticated 40 year old male. He would stop every once in a while and wrap his trunk around a bamboo plant, uproot it and eat it as he walked along. He also waded into a lake up to his eyes and drank for about 10 minutes - but he was very polite, and we didn't get showered. |
