At the very top of this carved pediment, is Shiva, with his wife Parvati at his left shoulder. At the bottom, is Ravana, the giant demon king. He's easy to spot with his 10 heads and 20 arms. He wants to attract Shiva's attention so he shakes Mount Kailasa, represented by the tiered pyramid. On the bottom tier, the creatures who live on the mountain flee in terror. On the second tier on the left, Hunuman, a monkey-headed demi-god, is holding up his hand, warning Ravana that one day soon, the monkeys will destroy him. This sculpture has been exposed to the elements for about 1,000 years. |
