"A work surpassing every edifice in the world"
- William of Malmesbury

"The rustiest old barn in heathendom"
- Mark Twain

While true that the Hagia Sophia, or Church of the Divine Wisdom, is not the most impressive of buildings from the outside, most people would agree with William's sentiment above, once they've been inside.

Built in 537 AD as a church for Emperor Justinian, then converted to a mosque in 1453 by Sultan Mehmet II and finally, converted to a museum in 1935 by Kemal Atatürk.
