It's odd to look at Topkapi Palace, from where, for centuries, the whole of the Ottoman Empire was controlled, and then to realize that about one-third of the grounds was devoted to the harem. The "treasury" is another large and interesting section. It includes hundreds of beautiful gems - including the Topkapi dagger with its three giant emeralds -- it's what Melina Mercouri and Peter Ustinov were trying to get hold of in the 1964 film. Unfortunately, no cameras are allowed today -- maybe they're worried about a sequel. |
