The Asclepion in Pergamum was a renowned medical center in ancient times. Massage, herbs, curative spring water - even dream analysis - played a part in diagnosis and treatment. It was run in the 2nd century AD by Galen, who gained an extensive knowledge of anatomy by being physician to the gladiators. This underground corridor, the cryptoporticus, brought patients from the "hospital" to a sacred spring. We took a swig and felt great all day. |
