Istanbul is a city of hills - you're always climbing up or down to get anywhere. When you can save steps it's a blessing. The apartment we're renting is on the top floor and comes complete with a small basket attached to a rope just long enough to reach the sidewalk.

Throughout the day vendors come by with small trucks or carts and call out their wares, each in their own distinctive voice. Women shout back from their windows and send their baskets down to be filled.
