You might think you were at the edge of a disappearing glacier, or in front of an ice cream factory run amok. But this is calcium carbonate - think, travertine marble. And this 'waterfall' in the ancient city of Hierapolis is one of a handful in the world that produce this startling effect. Hot underground spring water dissolves calcium salts. The water pours out into the open, cools and deposits the salts, leaving this 'arctic' landscape in its trail. Over the centuries these Roman tombs got in the way. |
