The Alhambra doesn't look all that impressive from the outside. It was originally built in the 9th century as a fortress. Only later, in the 13th and 14th centuries, did it become the royal residence of the Nasrid dynasty.

The site has a commanding view of Granada and the outlying plains for miles around. The Sierra Nevada mountains protect it on the northern side - a very advantageous spot.
