The surrounding terrace of the main pagoda contains scores of smaller pagodas and stupas. Everyone must remove shoes and socks before entering the 14 acre (6 hectares) site but green carpets are laid down so you don't burn your feet on the marble pavement - it can get quite hot on sunny days. President Obama on his recent visit to Yangon spotted the Shwedagon Pagoda from his limo and asked to visit. Nothing freaks out bodyguards more than a sudden change of plans. But he did visit and he removed his shoes and socks which I doubt was a big deal for him. But I'm told by a friend at the US Embassy that it didn't go over all that easily with the secret service. |
