After nearly a millennium most of the structures in Bagan are in need of restoration. But it was a devastating earthquake in 1975 that brought UNESCO in to help. But the military powers thought they knew better and kicked them out taking on the project themselves which they subsequently botched - so much so that Bagan was not awarded World Heritage status which it otherwise richly deserves. Ananda Phaya is the largest and most popular temple in Bagan. It dates from around 1100. Fortunately the Indian government is carrying out this massive restoration project and they're doing a beautiful job. |
