Bagan is the ancient capital of the first Burmese Kingdom. On the eastern shore of the mighty Irrawaddy its heyday was from 1057 to 1287 AD when over 13,000 temples, pagodas and stupas covered the landscape. There remain a few thousand strewn over the 50 square km site. It's one of the country's hottest tourist attractions - and you can take that both literally and figuratively. Even during the winter months the mercury runs high. It's impossible to see everything in a couple of days but we did get a peek at some of the town's highlights.
